Life Happens

This past Saturday evening, I was invited to my long-lost cousin Jack’s house for a “cousin’s reunion” with my South Philly cousins. It must be at least twenty-five years since I’ve seen the cousin I was so close to as a child, Joanne.
It was a great evening – we poured over a zillion old pictures and laughed ourselves sick as we remembered some of the incredibly crazy adventures we got ourselves into so many years ago.
How in the world did we lose touch, we wondered??!!! And the only answer I could come up with was, “I don’t know! I guess life happened!”
There are other things (and people!) that I never really meant to lose touch with, but then … life happened – isn’t it the same with you? One day turns into another, and then another, and then another … and suddenly twenty-five years have gone by.
So how do we stop life from getting in the way of the things that are important to us? Things like relationships, like tasks we meant to get done, like our faith?
I guess the answer is this: always be clear about the important things in life, otherwise life will just “happen.” And things that are so important to us – like our relationships with people we care about and even our relationship with God – might slip away before we even realize it. And what a sad thing it is when that happens!
Thank you, dear Lord, for the reminder you sent me this past weekend!
